Student Magazine Cover Image Edit

This is the original image in HDR taken from my iPhone then  later on edited in InDesign to remove the 'South Downs' writing in the background highlighting the logo. Also as the magazine is called South Downs I has to remove the writing to make the masthead stand out.

Flat Plan

The cover of my student magazine included the Masthead, Cover Line, Date, Puff, Pull Quote and Main Image.  These are all things required on the front page, the main image covers the whole background of the cover behind the text on the cover. The cover lines I have situated in the left hand side, giving a glimpse into what this magazines issue will contain.

With my work I like to take a minimalistic layout and effective imagery, this works well the layout and imagery are of good quality and used effectively. The imagery I have will be reflected and edited to achieve this. My contents page includes; information and imagery on the editor, title, 2 images using different types of shots, linking with the cover I have cover lines within the contents information and a page number.

Task 4; Background on the Media Industry.

Over 1.103 billion magazines were circulated in 2008, even though some people may argue that magazines are dying out because it’s the age of the internet. The way people have decided to consume these products has changed and they have become available in different media, e.g. through the internet or a phone app, however the main consumption method would be from a newsagent or supermarket. Customer publishing is to produce for organisations to give to their consumers as a form of marketing. A set number of issues building up an ‘encyclopaedia’, this means the number of realised magazines doesn’t change and is repeated throughout the magazines life. Within a newspaper there will be newspaper supplements coming free with the newspaper; this is to appeal to a wider audience within the actual newspaper. In the UK there are 3409 consumer magazines a combined annual consumer of 1.6 billion a year.

The total circulation for consumer magazines in the UK is 46 million, with this strong demand 69 new magazines were launched in the first month of 2010. The most popular being the ‘TV Choice’ magazine with a circulation of 1 million, ‘Glamour’ has the biggest women’s magazine in the UK with a circulation of 489,461. ‘New Musical Express’ (or NME’s) circulation decreased by 14.5% to 29,000 this is because all its articles videos and accessible gallery is all online and were people will go for their free product. As previously mentioned the demand for magazines is there however the magazines apps and internet are a large contributing factor for less of a demand, even though technology can be unreliable. 9/10 people read magazines, UK adults’ buys 22 magazines a year and 1.6 billion is spent on the advertising within the magazines. The media is influenced by adults aged 18-24 and what their age group would want to see in the magazines.
